Public transport in Poland is modern, affordable and available in almost every city. You can use buses, trams, metro (Warsaw) and some local trains with the same city ticket.
Most cities offer single tickets, time-based tickets, daily passes and monthly passes.
📍 Where to Buy Tickets
You can buy tickets:
- Ticket machines at bus, tram and metro stops AND inside public transport in some cities
- JakDojade Mobile App – best app in Poland for buying public transport tickets. You can also use it to check for delays and view routes
- Koleo Mobile App – the most popular app for buying train tickets between cities
All ticket machines accept cash PLN and bank cards.
If you buy a paper ticket, validate it in the ticket validator after boarding. If you buy a ticket via the app, in some cities the ticket becomes valid automatically upon purchase, whilst in other cities you need to buy a ticket and scan the QR code inside the public transport.

Children and some other groups may also qualify for discounted fares depending on local regulations.
🚨 Ticket Inspections
Ticket inspections are common in Poland.
If you travel without a valid ticket, you may receive a fine. On average, the fine is around 140 PLN if paid on the spot, and rises to 240 PLN (in Warsaw) if paid two weeks later.
There are usually two ticket inspectors, one on each side, and they look identical. They may hide their badge and terminal until they start the inspection, so you might not see them.
❗It is not necessary to provide your PESEL number to receive a fine to foreign nationals. Hand over your passport (photo won’t be accepted). If you give your PESEL and don’t pay the fine, you’ll be added to the debtors’ register and you won’t be able to take out a loan until you’ve settled the debt. Technically, if you only provide your passport, you won’t be able to be entered into the debtors’ register without your PESEL number.
⏳ Always insist on paying the fine later. If the inspector insists that the fine can only be paid on the spot, he is lying.
👮🏻♂️ By law, inspectors in Poland are authorised to detain you until the police arrive if you have not produced your identity documents so that a fine can be issued. But don’t be afraid of the police – they can only ask you to show your documents; that’s all. You will not be issued with an administrative fine, and this will in no way affect your application for a visa or residence permit.
